If you’ve been dreaming of visiting Alaska—and I mean the real Alaska, the kind with untamed wilderness, breaching whales, and calving glaciers—then a small ship cruise should be at the top of your list. One of the questions I get asked most often is: “When should I go?”

The truth is, there’s no single best time—it all depends on what you’re hoping to experience. I’ve sailed in Alaska several times (most recently just last week!) and each month offers something uniquely magical. Here's how to choose the right window for your perfect trip:

April & May: Spring Awakens

If you’re looking to beat the crowds and watch Alaska wake up from winter, spring is your time. Waterfalls are roaring from snowmelt, bears start emerging from hibernation, and the stillness of the season is perfect for those craving solitude and raw beauty. You'll spot migratory birds, witness snow-capped peaks in all their glory, and enjoy cooler temps perfect for hiking.

June: Wildlife and Longer Days

June brings endless daylight (seriously, sunset can be close to midnight!) and the landscape is bursting with life. Humpback whales arrive, wildflowers bloom, and you’ll have amazing chances to see bears foraging along the shoreline. It's an incredible time to explore—especially if you're a photography enthusiast or wildlife lover.

July & August: Peak Season, Peak Adventure

This is when Alaska is fully alive. You’ll find warmer temps, bustling wildlife activity, and lush green forests. It’s also salmon season, so if bear viewing is high on your list, this is prime time. Small ship itineraries often mean exclusive access to remote inlets and bays, where you can kayak near glaciers or hike to waterfalls with no crowds in sight.

September: Fall Vibes and Northern Lights

Early fall is a personal favorite. The air turns crisp, the leaves start to change, and you might even catch the Northern Lights dancing across the sky. Wildlife is still active, and with fewer travelers, it’s a quieter, more intimate time to explore. For those who like cooler weather and a touch of solitude, September delivers in a big way.

So, When Should You Go?

There’s no wrong answer—just the right trip for you. Whether you're dreaming of bear viewing, whale watching, wildflower-strewn hikes, or cozy evenings under the aurora, I’ll help you find the perfect time to go. And as someone who’s been there and sends dozens of travelers to Alaska every year, I’ve got the insight to guide you to the right sailing, the right itinerary, and the right experience.
